Retaining rings are made of a semi-flexible metal ring with open ends that can be snapped into a machined groove on a dowel pin or other component to allow rotation while blocking axial expansion. They can be classified as either internal or external, depending on whether they are installed over a shaft or into a bore. Pinned connections are frequently secured with circlips.
